Biz Beat: Clean energy means more jobs, report says

When it comes to "green jobs," many envision things like solar panel manufacturing or biofuel development.

But simply making Wisconsin homes, business and farms more energy efficient could bring millions in immediate savings while creating thousands of new jobs, a report says.
The report released Tuesday by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, a Chicago-based advocacy group, says Wisconsin could create as many as 14,600 new jobs while saving utility customers up to $946 million on their electric and natural gas bills by expanding the Focus on Energy program.

Dozens of companies and clean energy advocates gathered Tuesday at the Wisconsin Energy Expo in Madison to urge more support for the Focus on Energy program. Launched here in 2001, the program offers rebates and other assistance to homeowners or businesses that make energy improvements.

Program supporters say the impacts aren't often immediately visible. They might range from insulating a low-income apartment building in Milwaukee to constructing bioenergy digesters in rural areas to turn animal or food waste into burnable gas.
