HVAC Performance Testing

How many times have you heard “the second floor is hot in the summer and cold in the winter?” You have done everything you can to the heating and cooling system to make them comfortable, but achieved minimal results. Do you have excessive heat loss from the second floor, not enough heat coming out of the registers, or both? This class will review performance testing of a home’s thermal and pressure boundaries and demonstrate performance testing of forced air furnaces and duct systems.

Energy StarInstructor Brian Kumer will cover temperature rise and drop tests, total system air flow measuring methods, total static pressure tests, and pressure drop across coils and air filters using test equipment most attendees may already own. Locating and quantifying leaky ducts in unconditioned spaces can pose a challenge in the field; this course will address this challenge by using the blower door and pressure pan to screen ducts for leaks and duct pressure testing to quantify the leakage with a “total duct leakage test” and “duct leakage to the outside only” test.

Who should attend? - This is an intermediate to advanced skill-level class for home performance consultants and contractors. If you are performing home performance testing in homes or have at least some experience with residential forced air systems then this is the  class for you. You should be able to operate a blower door and be familiar with air flow measurements. BPI CEUs will be available for all BPI certified professionals.

Associated field experience sessions are for one half day the day after the full day course. As registration for each class opens, click the dates below to register:
