SSL Demonstrations from DOE

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) has announced a new project to do an LED lighting retrofit at a Department of Labor parking garage in Washington D.C. The project is part of the DOE Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technology Demonstration GATEWAY program.

As reported on the LightNow blog:

Salon on Lighting

The web-based politics and culture site Salon.com recently published an interview with Jane Brox, author of the new book “Brilliant: The Evolution of Artificial Light”. Those of us closely tied to lighting are well-versed in the implications of EISA on lighting product efficacy. What this interview presents, I think, is a look at this upcoming change and how it’s perceived outside of the industry. Sometimes we lighting geeks could do with a look at an outside perspective on the state of lighting. So here you go.

OLEDS Looking Better and Better...

As far as tech demos go, this one’s a doozy. Samsung has released this video showing what its new AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode – whew!) display is capable of.

L Prize 101

Up until this point, solid-state lighting in residential spaces has been limited mainly to niche applications: night lights, holiday strands, indicator lights, and a few others. The meat of the SSL energy savings potential, however, lies in general illumination. As with any emerging technology, sometimes a little nudge is needed, and in this case that nudge is called the L Prize.

Countdown to Philly…

One of U.S. DOE's annual SSL conferences – Voices for SSL Efficiency – makes its triumphant return this July 20-22 in the City of Brotherly Love. This omnibus workshop event blesses attendees with two full days of sessions providing one of the most comprehensive snapshots of the current LED space available. In addition, there are two pre-conference events available those able to spare an extra day in the office – a half-day tutorial (call it SSL 101) to bring LED newcomers up to speed on this technology, and a 90-minute webcast on evaluating LED street lighting for municipalities. And who doesn’t enjoy Jim Broderick’s collection of groan-inducing jokes?

Welcome to Crosslight!

Hello, and welcome to Crosslight, MEEA’s new blog on solid-state lighting! MEEA has been an active regional player in solid-state lighting as this technology has emerged as a feasible, high-efficiency light source. As part of our work in this arena, we’re bringing this online resource to you through our collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Technical Information for Solid-State Lighting (TINSSL) program.
