St. Michael seventh-grader wins second place in Lights For Learning poetry contest

Surrounded by his classmates, seventh-grader Sean McElligott got one of the best surprises of his life as he was announced as second-place winner in a statewide poetry contest Friday, Feb. 26.

The contest, Wild About Poetry, was sponsored by Lights For Learning — a nonprofit organization that provides schools and organizations an opportunity to fundraise by selling compact fluorescent light bulbs. The fundraising program is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, ComEd and Ameren Illinois Utilities and is administered by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance.
