A Passion for the Environment and for Future Resources
MEEA's staff is unique. We come to work every day excited about what we do and making a difference in the world. We "walk the walk," from biking to work each day to living vegetarian, healthful lifestyles. Our staff is inspired to reduce their impact on the environment on a personal and professional level, making the planet, and especially the city, state, and region in which we work, a safer and healthier place.
We are in the process of securing LEED certification, a designation for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Commercial Interior" (LEED-CI) from the U.S. Green Building Council for our new office space. When building out our new office, we reduced waste and the handling of waste during construction. We re-used many of the materials from our previous space, including existing light fixtures and lamps to design a new photo-sensing system to maximize daylighting and minimize electricity usage for lighting. We redesigned our old cubicles to maximize occupant space, and retained most of our previous office furniture including desks and filing cabinets.
For those materials that we did purchase or build new, we made a commitment to using as high a percentage of recycled content components as possible. By purchasing recycled-content materials from as close to home as possible, we helped to support the growing local markets for recycled material in Illinois and the Midwest by purchasing from those suppliers and manufacturers who have found a way to work with these materials. This was accomplished with the generous support of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) who helped with financing the incremental costs needed to acquire the recycled-content materials.
From lighting, to interior building systems and furnishings, to our indoor air quality, we seek to be efficient in every aspect of our office-the more efficient our office is, the less toxins we release into the indoor environment and the less greenhouse gases we release into the outside environment; the less energy we use, the more we save. MEEA offers a healthy, productive workplace that is less costly to operate and maintain, and that ensures a smaller environmental footprint.
